How can you turn a f*** buddy into a boyfriend?

Will it be like that scene on Sex & the City, where Carrie tries to date her f*** buddy, and it all goes to shit cuz they have nothing in common?
But I have had a few conversations with the Carpenter already, and think it would be a good thing to push it to the next level. What if I'm the one who is not interesting enough? What if he just doesn't want to be monogamous with "ME". and I'm "the problem".
